Tuscany is inextricably intertwined with nature, the cycles of the growing season, millennia of
history, a remarkably rich artistic and cultural history, and the unmistakable sense of deep time.
It offers the opportunity to relax into that sensibility and into simple every day pleasures.
Our Breathing Tuscan Air art retreat will combine the Tuscan experience with art making. It
includes painting with Anne Gaffey, sketching and walking tours with Janet McCarty and
poetry/haiku with Pat Gaffey. We’ll partake in the Tuscan atmosphere via food, wine,
community and experience.
Our accommodation, the Villa Domus Francigena complex, is a fifteenth-century property. The
home consists of a luxuriously appointed main villa and an equally elegant converted hayloft,
so we will have two kitchens, dining rooms, and living rooms. There’s a lot of room from which
to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Rejuvenate in the pool, enjoy the day beds, the private
sauna, or one of the numerous alfresco seating spots. You’ll be treated to views of the Tuscan
countryside from the garden. We’ll be based a 15-minute drive from the walled city of Lucca;
and will enjoy day trips to Lucca, Siena, Greve in Chianti and Florence.
Please join us as we breathe in Tuscany’s wonders, make art and savor life’s pleasures. Relax,
and let Tuscany seep into you.
View the tentative itinerary of the retreat on the Travel Info & Itinerary page.
Anne Gaffey is an award-winning mixed media artist who paints and teaches workshops and retreats in her San Diego studio. “I draw inspiration,” Anne says, “from vivid dreams and cherished memories, an open heart, and visions of a gentler, peaceful world.”
For more than 30 years in Southern California and New England, she has taught art classes to beginner to experienced students. Within the group setting, Anne’s students receive individualized attention and instruction in mixed media and acrylic painting. As founder of a successful paint and sip company called PaintStix!, she encourages everyone in her workshops: “It’s only paint, and you’re the boss!”
Anne's work has been featured in galleries in Boston, New York, and Los Angeles and in San Diego’s Little Italy, Liberty Station, and La Jolla Artwalks. She received the 2021 Award of Excellence at the Balboa Island Artwalk from Huse Skelly Fine Art Gallery. Anne's paintings are displayed in private collections throughout the U.S., and Anne has donated proceeds from her art to World Central Kitchen, feeding refugees and victims of war in Ukraine and Gaza.
